David G. Knott
David Knott is a Senior Partner in McKinsey & Company’s Health Care Practice and leads the Firm’s Center for US Health System Reform. Over the past 28 years, he has worked with many of the leading health insurers, health systems, health agencies, and large employers. David advises clients on both strategy development as well as transformation programs, including care delivery and payment model re-designs, administrative and medical cost restructuring, future operating visions, organization re-designs, capability building efforts, and M&A integration.
David is passionate about making quality health care affordable for everyone, particularly the least well off, and led the launch of the Firm’s Medicaid Practice. In the past two years, he has presented to the management teams and Boards of over 75 companies on the implications of health care reform and served as a keynote speaker at industry forums including America’s Health Insurance Plans, Health Datapalooza, World Health Care Congress, National Institute for Health Care Management, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, and National Governors Association.
Within McKinsey, David serves on the Partner Review Committee (PRC) and is a leader in Partner training, where he serves as Master Faculty for Client Leadership Workshop and New Partner Coach programs. David is an enthusiastic advocate for advancing the careers of McKinsey’s women professionals, leading the Women’s Initiative in the North East Office and serving as faculty for the Pathway to Partner and McKinsey Leadership Development programs. He has built gender balanced leadership teams on all the client service teams that he leads.
He previously served on the Advisory Boards of AthenaHealth and Castlight Health. He is an ardent supporter of the arts and serves on the Advisory Boards of the New York Metropolitan Opera, Manhattan School of Music, Glyndebourne Opera (UK), and Improbable Theater Company (UK). In 2009, he was a David Rockefeller Fellow with the Partnership for New York City. He lives in Manhattan and is married to Françoise Girard, a lawyer and President of the International Women’s Health Coalition. Françoise is also Chair of American Friends of Les Arts Florissants, a baroque orchestra. David and Françoise share many passions in life, including a love of opera, travel, reading, art, fashion, skiing, cycling, fine food, wonderful wine (especially Burgundian!), and spending time at their weekend home in Montreal.
David received PhD and MA degrees in political philosophy from Oxford University, UK and a BA in political philosophy from Queen’s University, Canada.
