Dr. Angela Spatharou

Angela works across the United Kingdom, where she supports National Health System (NHS) payers and providers on integrated care, service redesign, quality, and productivity. She also leads the McKinsey Healthcare Systems & Services Practice in Spain.

Since joining McKinsey, Angela has served NHS clients on integrated care and complex-reconfiguration programs. She has extensive experience in integrated health management and long-term conditions, especially focusing on prevention in the areas of diabetes, obesity, and mental health. Angela is a frequent speaker and author on these topics. In her work in Spain, she supported the end-to-end digital transformation of leading hospitals, working with public and private institutions on service redesign, advanced analytics, and e-Health.

Angela also spent four years in North America, leading McKinsey’s special needs populations (SNP) work—addressing the needs of patients with mental health or long-term care needs—as well as the SNP advanced-analytics team. During her time in North America, Angela served leading Medicaid, state, and private healthcare insurers on scaling-up innovative payment models; setting up accountable care organization programs; and improving payment integrity, care management, and population-health management. She has also helped address cost-efficiency challenges through overhead-value analysis, healthcare value optimization, automation, and digitization. Angela also served leading health systems in Latin America, where she led the McKinsey’s Healthcare Systems & Services Practice, helping to institutionalize programs to reduce maternal mortality, provide integrated care to complex diabetic patients, and improve hospital performance for leading national health systems.

Angela currently serves as a governor of the London School of Economics (LSE) and as a member of the LSE Audit and Risk committee, as well as a board member of Action on Addiction, UK. She also serves on the external advisory board of the US National Cancer Institute-sponsored Centre for Research Excellence in Mesoamerica for Cancer and Diabetes in Mexico City. She earlier acted as chair of the board of Kids’ City, a charity providing educational services to children in South London, and has a strong commitment to volunteer work, specifically related to education, public health, and women in STEM.

Angela obtained a PhD in politics and an MPhil in international relations from the University of Cambridge. She obtained a BA in law from the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens.
