Tim Welsh

Senior Partner

Tim Welsh is a Senior Partner in McKinsey’s Minneapolis office. In his 26 years with the firm, Tim has served clients throughout the financial services and consumer industries. Across industries, the common theme in Tim’s work has been developing strategies to help companies adapt their business models to the rapidly evolving changes in consumer expectations.

In financial services, he has worked extensively on marketing to consumers and small businesses, and developing strategies that generate significant growth. In addition, his work in other industries has focused primarily on understanding consumer behavior and developing strategies to respond to consumer preferences.

Within McKinsey, Tim plays several leadership roles to help guide this global institution. He is one of 30 elected Senior Partners who serve on the McKinsey’s Shareholders Council. Tim leads McKinsey’s global Learning and Development team, working with this group—and McKinsey more broadly—to adapt to the revolution that is occurring in our understanding of adult development. For example, Tim and the team created Partner University, an innovative learning program that has been profiled in Chief Learning Officer magazine and won the 2016 Gold Medal for Excellence in Leadership Development from the Brandon Hall Group.

Tim also cares passionately about helping the Minneapolis-St. Paul community thrive. He is one of the founders of the Itasca Project, a coalition of business, government and nonprofit leaders focused on building a vibrant economy and improved quality of life for all people in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The Itasca Project has been profiled in The New York Times, the McKinsey Quarterly, and in Thomas L. Friedman’s New York Times best-selling book, “Thank You for Being Late.”

In addition, Tim serves as Board Chair for the Greater Twin Cities United Way, and is President of the Board of Trustees at St. Paul Academy and Summit School. He also serves as Immediate Past Chair of the Board of GREATER MSP, Governance and Audit Committee Chair for the GHR Foundation, and as a member of the Boards of the Minnesota Orchestra, Commonweal Magazine and Minnesota Philanthropy Partners. Tim’s work in the community has been recognized by the Mayor of Minneapolis, and by Catholic Charities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Tim received an MBA and BA in social science from Harvard University.
